Epithelial cells between rumenal papilla exhibit ballooning degeneration (arrows), and in more superficial layers undergo necrosis, and pustule formation as a result on infiltration of neutrophils. Numerous bacteria (of little significance in the pathogenesis of this lesion) are present in the overlying crust.
