There is profound hemorrhage within the superficial epidermis, and segmental areas full-thickness epidermal necrosis (black arrows) characterized by hypereosinophilic and nuclear pyknosis. Note the viable, more vesicular nuclei in the epidermis at left, and then the lower left portion of the hair follicle.
